US President George W Bush has joined thousands of people for an emotional memorial service to the victims of the Virginia Tech university massacre. Earlier, police identified Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old South Korean-born student majoring in English, as the gunman behind the shooting. Fighter jets circled the skies above the small university town of Blacksburg as Mr Bush arrived for the memorial service for the 32 victims.
Bandidos to face court over Rebels clubhouse fire
Six men, including five members of the Bandidos motorcycle gang, will appear in a Brisbane court on Monday, charged over the arson of a rival bikie gang's clubhouse. Superintendent Rob Weir, of the Organised Crime Squad, on Sunday said five Bandidos' members, including current and former presidents, had been charged with setting fire to a Rebels clubhouse on March 27.
Police charge 19 after gold mine protest
Police have charged 19 people following a protest at a central-western NSW gold mining site, including a man who attempted to disrupt the activists' campsite. Eighteen people entered the Barrick Gold site at Lake Cowal at about 1.30pm (AEST) on Sunday, invading the site office and chaining themselves to machinery. Protesters say the company is stripping the area of precious water supplies and destroying the land of the traditional owners, the Wiradjuri people

Student loan repayment rises
The federal government has increased the income level at which university students must start paying back the cost of their tuition fees Education Minister Julie Bishop announced people with Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) debts would now not have to begin paying back their student loans until their income reached $39,825 - an increase on the current $38,149. The change, which affects people with HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP debts, will take effect on July 1 this year.
Kids protest Lane Cove Tunnel fumes
Children as young as six have joined a vocal protest outside the NSW deputy premier's office, demanding air filtration be installed in Sydney's Lane Cove Tunnel. About 30 people, including around 20 children, gathered outside the office of John Watkins, also the member for the electorate where the tunnel is located, chanting "stacks of pollution we don't want".
NSW Libs vow to reform juvenile justice
"Deadbeat" parents of juvenile offenders will be ordered to take parenting classes under a NSW Opposition policy set to be announced. Opposition juvenile justice spokeswoman Catherine Cusack said the policy, which also lowers the age of criminal responsibility from 14 to 10, is aimed at earlier and better intervention to stop offending.

Young feel 'more insolated than elderly'. Younger people feel more isolated and at risk of harm than older people, an Australian Red Cross survey has found. The survey also shows 1.7 million young Australians would have no one to turn to in their local area for support in a crisis or emergency.
