Fitzroy Crossing - ban takeaway alcohol
A call has gone out to the federal government to intervene to stop takeaway alcohol sales wreaking "havoc and death" at a remote pub, owned by the federal government, in Western Australia's Kimberley region. Aboriginal women of Fitzroy Crossing, the Derby shire council and the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre (KALACC) want a 12 month moratorium on takeaway alcohol sales in the area, says KALACC spokesman Wes Morris.
Road rage attack Perth toddler injured
A two-year-old Perth girl has a serious head wound requiring plastic surgery after a vicious road rage attack. The toddler was injured when a man began wielding a steering lock to smash the windows of a car being driven by her mother in Perth's eastern suburbs.
WA childrens illness search continues
West Australian health authorities are desperately trying to find the cause of an illness that has killed four young children in Perth. The WA Health Department announced a fourth child had died from a similar cause of illness as three who died two weeks ago.
Troy Mercanti confined to home
Coffin Cheater bikie Troy Mercanti will stay within the confines of his home and under close surveillance until his trial for allegedly bashing a man at a Perth tavern. Troy Mercanti was granted home detention bail by Magistrate Peter Michelides in the Fremantle Magistrates Court, for allegedly punching a man and stomping on his chest at the Coolbellup Tavern, in Perth's south on June 15.
Perth dumped baby to be christened, buried
A donated headstone will mark the burial plot of a baby boy found dead at a Perth rubbish recycling plant last month. The newborn was believed to have been dead for a week when his body was discovered in a handbag among household garbage at the Atlas Recycling facility in north suburban Malaga.
Police to interview Halls Creek child abuse suspects
The Shire President of Halls Creek has moved to scotch rumours that police are going to interview every child in the town as part of an investigation into child abuse. The special police task force investigating child sex abuse in the Kimberley has charged a twelfth person with child sex offences. The Acting Police Commissioner Chris Dawson and members of the taskforce attended a meeting with Halls Creek Shire Councillors today.
Perth house search completed
Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers have completed their search of a house in the Perth suburb of Subiaco and have started examining evidence they seized. The search is believed to be related to the investigation into links between some overseas trained doctors and terrorism. Police left the Coghlan Street residence early this morning after examining the house overnight.
Police tight-lipped on Perth raid
Australian Federal Police (AFP) and WA Police have spent the night examining a house in the Perth western suburb of Subiaco which is believed to be connected to an investigation into alleged links between terrorism and foreign trained doctors. The AFP are refusing to say why they raided the house on Coghlan Road yesterday afternoon, only that their search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation.
Teen recovering after sea lion attack
A 13-year-old girl is recovering in a Perth Hospital after being mauled in an almost unheard of attack by a sea lion on a West Australian beach. Ella Murphy was savaged by the sea lion on Friday as she was being towed on a surfboard behind a speedboat at Lancelin, north of Perth. Boat driver and family friend Chris Thomas said the sea lion attacked the teenager twice before he was able to drag Ella to safety
Man questioned over pedestrian death
Police have questioned a Perth man over the death of a pedestrian who was dragged 80 metres under a car. The 38-year-old pedestrian was killed near his home at Medina, in southern Perth, at 1.20am (WST) on Sunday. Police believe the man may have been lying on the road before he was run over. The driver stopped and sought help from neighbours but then returned to his car and drove off, leaving the body behind, police said.
Emotional appeal after hit-and-run tragedy
Police are hunting a driver who ran down and killed a 38-year-old Perth man, before speeding away. Police say Brian Winmar was dragged along the road for 80 metres and died before paramedics could get to him. Mr Winmar was hit by a car outside his house on Beacham Crescent in Medina at about 1am this morning.
Detectives to investigate fatal Perth fire
Arson squad detectives are still waiting to enter the ruins of a house in Perth's north, which was destroyed in an overnight fire that killed three people. A woman and her two sons, aged 12 and eight, lived at the Finnerty Street address in Karrinyup, although the bodies have not been formally identified.
Luc Longley's house desroyed by fire
Former professional basketball star Luc Longley, his family and his children's friends escaped a fire which gutted his $2 million house at Fremantle, fire authorities say. The blaze started about 3am (AWST) on Saturday at Luc Longley's house in Montreal Street in the port suburb of Perth.
Port Authority denies lead poison link
The Esperance Port Authority at the centre of a lead poisoning scare in the West Australian town says it had not breached its licence or deliberately let heavy metals wash into the ocean. People in the southern town have been undergoing blood tests and having their rain water tanks tested since discovering this month that 4,000 mystery bird deaths around the town were probably caused by lead poisoning.
Cyclone Kara forms off WA coast
A Category one tropical Cyclone Kara has formed off the coast of far north Western Australia. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said a cyclone watch had been issued for coastal areas between Broome and Onslow as Cyclone Kara approached. BOM spokesman Andrew Burton said Cyclone Kara would probably intensify during the next 24 hours but then weaken as it approached the coast.
