 | Village Life residents wait to hear fate
Retirement village operator Village Life says it will try to convince the company that has bought its properties to extend residents' leases.
More than 400 residents in New South Wales, Victoria , Tasmania and Western Australia have been told to get out by the end of next month, after investment company MFS bought 10 Village Life properties.
Village Life residents had an angry meeting with executives last night at Tamworth in New South Wales.
Village Life operations manager Brian Hansen says the company will meet with MFS to discuss a possible extension of the lease arrangement.
"I will do whatever is humanly possible within the confines of Village Life restrictions to assist," he said.
Tamworth resident, Lexie Lord, is not convinced.
"Well they might say they're not kicking us out but they terminated the leases," she said.
Rental tenancy advocates are considering legal options for residents.
'Illegal' notices
Around 165 Village Life residents in Ballarat, Warrnambool, Shepparton and Mildura, Victoria are also facing eviction.
But Consumer Affairs Victoria says they cannot be thrown out of their homes.
Consumer Affairs Victoria's David Cousins says the letters sent to residents are not legal eviction notices.
"Proper notice has not been given to the residents of the termination of their agreements and we are concerned that the letters that have gone out to the residents have been construed as eviction notices," he said.
