 | Tony Mokbel charged with Michael Marshall murder
Captured drug lord Tony Mokbel has been charged with a second murder - that of kickboxer Michael Marshall in 2003 - as he fights his extradition from Greece.
Purana Taskforce detectives said the fresh murder charge would form part of Victoria Police's application to extradite Tony Mokbel from Greece, where he is being held following his capture this month.
Tony Mokbel, 41, was apprehended in Athens early this month after fleeing Australia in March last year, while on bail during his Victorian Supreme Court trial on charges of importing 2kg of cocaine.
In his absence, Tony Mokel was convicted and sentenced to a minimum of nine years in jail. While on the run, he was also charged with the March 2004 murder of Melbourne gangland figure Lewis Moran - an allegation he has denied.
A hot dog vender and kickboxer, Michael Marshall was gunned down outside his South Yarra home as his five-year-old son waited in his father's car in October, 2003.
Gangland serial killer Carl Williams is already serving 21 years for the murder of Marshall, a suspected drug dealer.
It was alleged during Carl Williams trial that he and Tony Mokbel had offered $300,000 for the hit on Michael Marshall because Tony Mokbel believed him responsible for the July 2003 murder of gangland identity Willy Thompson.
The gunman, who cannot be named, is serving a life sentence for three counts of murder.
Last week, Victoria's Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon indicated Tony Mokbel would face a second charge of murder for Michael Marshall .
Tony Mokbel is currently locked up in the high-security Korydallos Prison in Athens, awaiting a trial on Greek forgery charges as well as extradition proceedings.
Greek police allege Tony Mokbel was carrying a forged passport and driver's licence when he was arrested at a seaside cafe in Athens.
Tony Mokbel recently said he was convinced he would never get a fair trial in Victoria and would fight his extradition.
