 | Tighter water restrictions delayed for Melbourne | |
 | Drenching rain looks certain to spare Melburnians from tough stage four water restrictions.
Victorian Premier Steve Bracks said a tightening of restrictions above level 3a was less likely.
However, winding water bans back to level three would depend on the weather, he said.
"There would have to be a significant downfall for that to occur," Mr Bracks told reporters.
"I think it's less likely it will move to stage four because of some good water inflows, but we're still more than 10 per cent down on what we were last year."
Mr Bracks said the government expected to receive advice from water authorities by the end of the month.
Water Minister John Thwaites would then decide if restrictions would change.
Stage four restrictions were set to be introduced on August 1 if water storages dropped below the trigger point of 29.3 per cent capacity.
Dams are 33.9 per cent full.
Under stage four restrictions, outdoor watering would be banned.
Mr Bracks said the government's water augmentation plan, including a desalination plant and north-south pipeline, would help secure water resources into the future.
"The reserves are still low, significantly lower than they were last year and we still need to make sure that we have enough and significant water capacity to deal with the summer period and ongoing," he said.
