| Tennant Creek take-away alcohol ban | |
| Tennant Creek's women's shelter in the Northern Territory is at full capacity, a day after a ban on most alcohol take-aways was placed on the town.
The number of women at the shelter was one of the key reasons the licensing commission introduced the restrictions.
Territory Police applied for the ban yesterday after two brawls within hours of each other erupted in the town, one involved up to 70 people.
Two hours after the application was submitted the Licensing Commission decided the surge in violence, an increase in the number of hospital admissions and the women's shelter being at full capacity was enough to justify the ban.
Until 12:00pm ACST on Monday people will only be allowed to take away light or mid-strength beer, or bottled wine.
Peter Marshall from the Headframe Bottle Shop says he understands the reasoning.
"I suppose you got to swing both ways too, because we've got to be of some help," he said.
Mr Marshall says his bottle shop will take a hit financially.
Tennant Creek police say they made no arrests in the town last night thanks to restrictions on takeaway alcohol in the town.
Until midday tomorrow, people are only allowed to take away light or mid-strength beer, or bottled wine.
The Territory's Licensing Commission introduced the ban on Friday after two large brawls within hours of each other erupted in the town.
Police say on some Saturday nights they will take up to 70 people into protective custody and arrest others for domestic violence.
But they say last night was very quiet, with no arrests in the town at all.
