Search for missing backpacker resumes
A break in the weather on Wednesday allowed a rescue helicopter to resume its search for a Danish backpacker missing on Tasmania's snow-covered Cradle Mountain. Inspector Brian Edmonds said improved conditions should also allow a specialist police team to be airlifted to the peak on Thursday.

Cradle Mountain search for missing tourist halts
The search for a Danish tourist missing on Tasmania's freezing Cradle Mountain has been suspended because of bad weather. Low cloud, rain, and the threat of snow grounded the Westpac rescue helicopter and drove police, the State Emergency Service and volunteers to search tracks below the mountain.

A dipsute between Tasmania's Anglican Church and a nightclub owner may be headed for the courts. The owner of Players Sports Bar, in the grounds of St David's Cathedral in Hobart, has been told to vacate the church-owned premises within 14 days.

scientist with a strong connection to Macquarie Island is disappointed in the Tasmanian Government's refusal to fund a rabbit eradication program. Patrick Quilty from the University of Tasmania's School of Earth Sciences first visited the island in 1968 and contributed to the research that led to the island becoming a World Heritage Area.

Cancer patients moved
Some cancer patients at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) may have been exposed to a deadly dust-borne mould. Eighteen patients from the oncology ward had to be moved over the past few days because someone tampered with a seal separating the patients from building works, allowing dust in.

The drought is continuing to take its toll on Hydro Tasmania's dams, with storage levels still dropping. The energy supplier says rain towards the end of last month only had a minimal impact, with dams experiencing their 10th straight year of below-average inflow.

Albatross facing Aussie extinction
The grey headed albatross could become extinct in Australia if funding delays continue for pest eradication on the World Heritage listed Macquarie Island, conservationists warned on Thursday. The delays also would be devastating for the sub-Antarctic island's penguins, petrels and other seabirds, said WWF scientific advisory committee member Dr Andrew Burbidge.

Gastro hospital outbreak worsening
A gastroenteritis outbreak at a hospital in northwest Tasmania has dramatically worsened, forcing the cancellation of all elective surgery. North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) chief executive Ken Campbell said so far 42 staff and 27 patients had been affected by gastro across both NWRH Mersey and Burnie campuses. He said that while other services were being maintained, both campuses were under severe pressure and patients may need to be referred to other hospitals.

Mass murderer Martin Bryant is on suicide watch in Tasmania's Risdon prison after cutting himself with razor blades twice in two days. Martin Bryant, who is serving 35 life sentences for shooting dead 35 people at Port Arthur in 1996, used a disposable razor blade he had hidden in his body to cut his neck early on Tuesday, prison authorities said.

Another attempt by Martin Bryant, Australia's worst mass murderer to take his life in Tasmania's Risdon prison was a cry for help and should have been stopped by management, a prisoner advocate says. Martin Bryant was reportedly found in a pool of blood in the jail after slashing his wrist.

Duck shooting season opens in Tasmania
Tasmania's duck shooting season has opened but birds are in such short supply that there's been none of the usual clashes between wildlife activists and hunters. About 45 Coalition Against Duck Shooting activists arrived at Moulting Lagoon at the entrance to Freycinet National Park, in Tasmania's east, before sunrise on Saturday. They were prepared for battle in their annual campaign to disrupt the shooters and save the ducks.

Agnes Water often called Agnes Waters and it is common for Lady Musgrave Island to be called Lady Musgrove Island and Captain Cook to Captian Cook and Capitan Cook or Captan Cook, with the Town of Seventeen Seventy now known as 1770 that would be hard to misspell for anyone. The correct spelling of Bundaburg Queensland, is Bundaberg.
