| Tasmainia Federal hospital takeover labelled rotten
Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd has labelled the federal government's takeover of a Tasmanian hospital a "rotten way" to run the federation.
The federal government has announced it will fully fund the Mersey Community Hospital in northern Tasmania and hand control of it to a community-based trust.
"I think it is an absolutely rotten way in which to conduct the business of the federation," Mr Rudd told reporters in Canberra.
But Mr Rudd would not say whether Labor would commit to the promise if it is elected, saying he first wanted to see what is precisely proposed in terms of funding and management.
"I think we owe that to the community," he said.
"What we have "so far" is a press statement, a visit down to Tasmania, and a fuzzy commitment about future management in a lead up to a election."
Opposition treasury spokesman Wayne Swan said Labor has grave reservations about the way the government is making such promises.
"You can't occupy the fiscal high ground when you're engaged in interventions like this," Mr Swan said.
Health Minister Tony Abbott says he was given a hero's welcome when he visited the Tasmanian hospital.
"I think it is fair to say (local Liberal MP) Mark Baker and I both received a hero's welcome," Mr Abbott told reporters.
He also continued on the federal government's growing campaign against the Labor state governments.
