 | Students to hold national day of action
University students will hold rallies across Australia as they launch a new campaign opposing the federal government's policies on climate change, industrial relations and higher education.
Several thousand people are expected to attend national day of action demonstrations in Sydney and Melbourne, with smaller crowds in other capitals.
They will protest, primarily, against increases in HECS fees for university courses and the introduction of voluntary student unionism.
But the National Union of Students says it's using the election year to campaign beyond education issues and to make its voice heard in other areas of concern to students.
It says many young people are dismayed by the government's response to global warming and its introduction of the Work Choices industrial relations laws.
The union wants to mobilise students to campaign on these issues, particularly in marginal electorates.
Just a week out from the federal budget, the union is calling on the government to provide extra financial support for students.
A report by the Australian Vice Chancellors Committee in March found almost a quarter of full-time undergraduates were skipping classes to attend paid employment just to make ends meet.
Two in five students believed paid work hurt their studies.
