Scientist criticises Tasmanian Govt
Scientist criticises Tas Govt over Macquarie Is pest control

A scientist with a strong connection to Macquarie Island is disappointed in the Tasmanian Government's refusal to fund a rabbit eradication program.

Patrick Quilty from the University of Tasmania's School of Earth Sciences first visited the island in 1968 and contributed to the research that led to the island becoming a World Heritage Area.

Professor Quilty, who is also a former chief scientist of the Antarctic Division, says the State Government was involved in eradicating cats on the sub-Antarctic Island and it is odd that it now will not take responsibility for the rabbits.

He says the delay is doing damage to the island as the rabbits are eating the vegetation.

"Where is was a luxuriant growth of tussock grass in the past and this is up to half a metre or a metre high in places there are, the tussock grass itself is in very, very bad condition and it's been one of the key things that's been holding the ground together," he said.

Two professional shooters will begin targeting rabbits on the sub-Antarctic island after winter.

But Professor Quilty says shooting is not a useful way to begin an eradication program, and he wants the State Government to fund a full-scale eradication as soon as possible.

"If at the end of the process you found you had a couple of little pockets where there were still some rabbits, then I think it's a better thing to do to go in with other techniques and try to get rid of them but you've got to get rid of the bulk of them right at the beginning, ideally the whole lot," he said.

The Tasmanian Government believes the program is a Federal Government responsibility because the island is a World Heritage listed area.
