 | School Boys guns were for rabbit shooting
Two Victorian secondary schoolboys who took sawn-off weapons and ammunition with them on a school camp were going to use them to shoot rabbits, police believe.
Inspector Craig Gillard said there appeared to be nothing sinister behind the decision of the boys, aged 14 and 15, from Colac College in south-west Victoria, to take the guns to the camp at Bairnsdale, in Gippsland.
The weapons were found last Tuesday by teachers who searched the boys' bags because they suspected they had smuggled in alcohol.
They found a .22 calibre sawn-off rifle and 10 rounds of ammunition in one bag, and a 12-gauge sawn-off shotgun and seven rounds of ammunition in another bag.
"The fact that they found a spotlight in one bag suggests the boys were looking at shooting rabbits," Insp Gillard told AAP.
"There is no suggestion of anything sinister. It was more an act of stupidity by the boys, showing their lack of maturity."
Insp Gillard said the sawn-off shotgun would have been useless because it had been made inoperable.
"Our detectives have investigated the matter thoroughly and have been heavily involved with the schoolboys," he said.
"I don't know where they got the guns from, but they are country boys."
He said any disciplining of the boys was a matter for the school and police would not be pressing charges.
Bairnsdale police were notified of the incident last week and confiscated the guns immediately.
