 | South Australia governor Kevin Scarce sworn in
A staunch republican and former navy chief Kevin Scarce has been sworn in as South Australia's governor.
Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce was officially sworn in at a ceremony at the Adelaide Festival Centre, beginning his five-year tenure as the replacement for the retiring Marjorie Jackson-Nelson.
Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, who was appointed in May, was a commander of HMAS Cerberus during a distinguished naval career before heading the federal government's Defence Materiel Organisation.
He quit that position in 2004 to become chief executive of the SA government's defence unit, and played a key role in the state winning the $6 billion contract to build Australia's new air warfare destroyers.
SA Premier Mike Rann said Adelaide-born Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce was "a true son of South Australia".
"With sound judgment and quiet determination, he played a critical role in helping our state secure the biggest defence contract in Australian history," Mr Rann said.
"And on the personal front, his quiet dignity, affable nature and great sense of humour give him an empathy with people from all walks of life."
Liberal leader Martin Hamilton-Smith said he shared a bond with Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce - service in the Australian Defence Force.
"A leader in Australia's defence force requires compassion and humility, these characteristics will hold you in good stead during your time as governor," said Mr Hamilton-Smith, a former army commander.
