| HIA calls for rental assistance fund, by the end of the decade, 750,000 Australians will be classified as under rental stress.
HIA a peak housing body has called on the Commonwealth and the states to set up a rental assistance fund, after predictions the number of Australians suffering rental stress will soar in the next three years.
A new report published by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling and the Housing Industry Association (HIA) has further highlighted the lack of affordable rental accommodation in Australia.
The report predicts that half of all Australians in the private rental market will battle to pay their rent over the next three years.
By the end of the decade, 750,000 Australians will be classified as under rental stress because they will be handing over 40 per cent or more of their income to their landlords.
HIA managing director Ron Silberberg says action needs to be taken now.
"We are calling on federal and state governments to establish, as a matter of priority, a rental crisis relief fund," he said.
Mr Silberberg says the fund will provide income support for people unable to meet their rent payments.
He says there is a deep-seated problem in the private rental sector.
"The disease has spread right across Australia," he said.
"You've got record-low rental vacancy rates, you've got increases in private sector rents ahead of general inflation.
"In some cities the increases in rents have been alarming."
