Police to interview Halls Creek child abuse suspects
The Shire President of Halls Creek has moved to scotch rumours that police are going to interview every child in the town as part of an investigation into child abuse.

The special police task force investigating child sex abuse in the Kimberley has charged a twelfth person with child sex offences.

The Acting Police Commissioner Chris Dawson and members of the taskforce attended a meeting with Halls Creek Shire Councillors today.

The Halls Creek Shire President, Trish McKay, says the taskforce is working through a list of suspects and has warned people to be wary of rumours.

"There's stories going around that the police are going to interview every child which is not the case so people can rest easy there," she said.

"It's only, you know, they're interviewing people that have, that they know of."

The head of a Federal Government taskforce set up to tackle child abuse, Sue Gordon, has spoken out in favour of bringing in the army to support Aboriginal communities in Western Australia.

Dr Gordon says the army could be used to build houses and improve infrastructure in Aboriginal communities.

She has dismissed some concerns expressed about army occupation.

"The army are not in there occupying any of these communities, they're visiting and then they're moving on," she said.

The Opposition has called for the State government to accept a federal offer of military support to deal with the growing child abuse crisis in Aboriginal communities.

The Opposition Leader, Paul Omodei, says the State Government should talk with the Federal Government to devise a long term solution to the problem.

Mr Omodei says defence forces could help with infrastructure and peace keeping like they do in other countries.

"I believe the military should be called in, Sue Gordon has said that, a number of Aboriginal leaders have said the military should come in," he said.

"There's no doubt that they have logistical expertise that can be used in building housing, and infrastructure and a new water supply, all of those kinds of things. So there's no doubt that the federal offer should be accepted by the State Government."

But the Acting Premier, Eric Ripper, says the State Government will not be accepting the offer of military assistance.

Mr Ripper says the problem will only be fixed with a sustained policing effort rather than the military.

"We just have a view as to what is good policy in this area, what is the best application of taxpayers' resources, what gets results, and our police are getting those results, and that's what we should be backing," he said.

The Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister, Mal Brough, says the State Government totally misunderstands the Commonwealth's offer of military assistance.

Mr Brough says he has received a letter from Mr Ripper and will respond early next week.

"They're not there to replace police, they're not there to be substitutes, they're their to support the deployment of sworn police officers where there is insufficient accommodation, communications could be a problem, and transportation," he said.
