 | PM joins call for Andrew Johns to be 'immortalised'
Rugby league legends - and the Prime Minister - are calling for outgoing Knights captain Andrew Johns to be inducted as one of the game's immortals.
Johns announced his forced retirement on Tuesday after doctors warned a neck injury sustained in training could be exacerbated if he kept playing.
Health experts told the Newcastle half-back previously undetected damage to a disc meant he could be confined to a wheelchair if he took to the pitch again.
"It is a shock, but I'm not totally disappointed because I've had some great memories," the veteran player told reporters.
Big names from the sport are now hinting he will be listed as a league 'immortal'.
"His statistics and the ability he has shown over the years on what I call the big stage has proven that he deservedly owns that right," Australian rugby league coach Ricky Stuart told Sunrise.
Prime Minister John Howard joined the call for Johns' playing achivements to be formally recognised.
"Gee its a loss," the PM said. "He'll join the immortals, he's of that calibre. He's been one of the greats of the game and I wish him well for the future."
NRL chief David Gallop said Johns, a former NSW and Australia captain, would be sorely missed.
"Joey's been a colossal figure in our game for 15 years," he said. "He'll be remembered for his brilliance in attack and defence, and for his competitiveness.
"Players wanted to play in the team with him, players wanted to play against him because they knew they were playing against one of the best for all time."
Johns, the highest point-scorer in NRL history, is expected to take up a career in the media.
Over the course of his career, he played in 23 State of Origin matches, and represented Australia in 21 tests.
