 | Union says new council working conditions unsafe
A central Queensland union says it has reservations about trade-offs being offered to its workers by a local council in negotiations under the new WorkChoices legislation.
The Banana Shire Council says legal advice it has received says it has no choice but to move to the federal system, although the union movement has launched a legal challenge.
Conditions offered by the Banana Shire include longer working hours for special projects to be offset by shorter hours the next day, but Craig Giddins from the Electrical Trades Union says that is a recipe for fatigue-related problems.
"We can't have people going out and being forced, under Howard's industrial relations system, to work long hours that fatigue the employees and make it unsafe for them to work under those conditions," Mr Giddins said.
The Deputy Federal Opposition Leader, Julia Gillard, says she can understand the union's concerns.
"I can understand why local government workers don't want to be under John Howard's system because his system allows penalty rates and shift loadings and public holidays and traditional benefits to be taken away without giving a dollar of compensation," Ms Gillard said.
