 | Labor to introduce national dental scheme
The Health Services Union is campaigning for a scheme to expand Medicare to cover dental services for the elderly, children and low income earners.
It says half of all Australians have put off dental treatment because they cannot afford it.
Federal Opposition spokeswoman for health Nicola Roxon says Labor will introduce a national dental scheme if it wins the next election.
Ms Roxon says there are 650,000 people on dental waiting lists and it is not uncommon for people to be waiting 10 years for treatment.
"It's very hard for any state to be able to handle on their own and it's an area where the Commonwealth has a responsibility to step in and assist, that's what we intend to do," Ms Roxon said.
"But I don't think people want to wait for a federal Labor government at the end of the year to do that, they want John Howard and Tony Abbott to act now and that's what we're calling on them to do."
