 | Diabetes drug Metformin tested on overweight women
Scientists are testing whether a popular diabetes drug Metformin can help young Australian women lose weight.
Metformin is widely used for the treatment of type two diabetes but there is emerging evidence it also can help reduce appetite and body weight.
Nutrition experts plan to test the medication's weight loss potential on overweight non-diabetic women aged between 18 and 35.
Studies have shown that about 40 per cent of women gain a "significant" amount of weight in their 20s.
Researcher Siew Lim said young Australian women were gaining weight faster than previous generations.
"Managing weight can be difficult for young women due to juggling the responsibilities of parenting, advancing careers and relationships," said Ms Lim, a PhD student at the University of Adelaide.
"Health, diet and exercise may sometimes take a back seat to these."
Lack of exercise was particularly common in this group so, says Ms Lim, it's important to test alternative ways to tackle the problem.
The study, led by human nutrition experts at the CSIRO, will compare the benefits of diet and drugs over three months.
One third of the women will take Metformin, one third will take a dummy drug and the remainder will be supported by the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet.
This will be followed by three months of online support to maintain the new weight.
Metformin, marketed under several names including Diabex and Diamicron, improves control of blood glucose and reduces weight and cholesterol in people with type two diabetes.
Preliminary research shows it can also help treat polycystic ovarian syndrome, but there is limited proof of its benefits in general weight loss.
