| Melbourne accused mass rapist appears in court
More suspected victims of a Melbourne mass rapist have come forward, police said as an accused man appeared before court.
John Nicholous Xydias, 43, of Glen Iris, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court accused of rape and indecent assault charges.
Outside court, Detective Acting Inspector Simon Clemence, of the Sexual Crime Squad, said three more women had come forward since publicity about the case on Friday.
He said there were currently six alleged victims and police were still hoping to hear from women who believed they knew John Xydias.
"Once again we're calling for anyone who knows the accused to come forward and speak to us," he said.
During the brief hearing John Xydias' lawyer asked if his client could be placed in protective custody when he was moved from the Melbourne Custody Centre.
Magistrate Paul Smith remanded John Xydias for his next court appearance on Friday.
John Xydias, who is alleged to be infatuated with TV celebrity Naomi Robson, was arrested last Friday.
Police allegedly found 90 video tapes which they say identified 16 separate women, allegedly unconscious, in activities including sexual intercourse and acts of indecent assault.
