 | Lost buoy found on beach | |
 | A valuable scientific buoy deployed three years ago in one of the world's deepest ocean trenches north of New Zealand has been found washed up on a north Queensland beach.
Seismometer buoys measure the movement of the ground, including earthquake activity.
The buoy was deployed in the Kermadec Trench, north of New Zealand, in a depth of 5230 metres, with 15 other instruments.
The important data collected by the buoy was feared lost until a Townsville family stumbled upon it at their local beach last month.
They alerted the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) about a strange object washed up at Alva Beach.
AIMS engineering and field operations manager Gary Brinkman inspected the buoy, quickly realising it was extremely valuable.
He said that after some research the buoy was traced back to Professor Ernst Flueh of the Leibniz Institute in Germany.
Prof Flueh said he was ecstatic over the news.
"For us, the recovery of the instrument is not only the value of the instrument in terms of money (about 30,000 euro or $A41,615), even more the data stored on the instrument that otherwise would be lost," he said.
The buoy spent more than two years in the ocean trench and travelled thousands of kilometres across the Coral Sea to Townsville.
It is unknown how the buoy escaped from the trench. It will be shipped to Germany.
