Kids protest Lane Cove Tunnel fumes
Kids protest Lane Cove Tunnel fumes

Children as young as six have joined a vocal protest outside the NSW deputy premier's office, demanding air filtration be installed in Sydney's Lane Cove Tunnel.

About 30 people, including around 20 children, gathered outside the office of John Watkins, also the member for the electorate where the tunnel is located, chanting "stacks of pollution we don't want".

The parents and kids laid flowers and candles outside Mr Watkin's office window and later held a minute's silence in tribute to people who may potentially be affected by pollution.

The Lane Cove Tunnel opens on Sunday - the day after the state election - after months of controversy surrounding its construction and potential health risks.

Elizabeth Court, president of the Mums and Dads Against Stacks protest group, said children were the most vulnerable to pollution from the Lane Cove Tunnel and had been pulled from schools to demonstrate.

"Our kids can't vote and they can't speak, so we will speak on their behalf," she told reporters.

"It's not too late (to install filtration), the technology is there, the money is there, it's (the tunnel is) a billion-dollar project."

"Many of our kids are very upset ... they're having trouble really coming to terms with what's going to happen to them in a few days' time when the tunnel opens," Ms Court said.

She urged the government to install filtration inside the tunnel's stacks, saying it could be done without affecting the opening or operation of the tunnel.

She said residents anywhere within a 2km radius of the tunnel would be affected by pollutants released by the tunnel and she was considering moving out of the area.

Many of the children attending the protest held anti-tunnel signs reading "I don't get no filtration" and later stuck hand-painted drawings on Mr Watkins' window.

Julia, 8, said she was protesting because of concerns over her health and the health of her friends who had asthma.

"We're trying to make Mr Watkins put in filtration because if he doesn't, then everybody will be breathing bad air and getting asthma," she said.
