RSL to respect Japan's decision on Japanese submarine
The RSL says it will respect whatever decision the Japanese government makes over the fate of its long-lost World War II submarine found in Australian waters.
A wreck off Sydney's northern beaches has been confirmed as the Japanese midget M24 submarine, missing since it helped launch a deadly surprise attack on Sydney Harbour in 1942.
What became of the sub after the night attack, which killed 19 Australian and two British sailors, had remained a mystery until it was found by recreational divers last week.
The government has notified the Japanese government and begun discussions on how best to manage the site.
RSL president Bill Crews said he expected the wreck to be left where it was, given it likely contained the remains of its two-man crew.
"Our view is it's really the call of the Japanese, it's their vessel and under the maritime laws they can reasonably claim it and do what they wish with it," Mr Crews said.
"Having said that, I would expect they would like to leave it where it is because two sailors most probably perished in it ... (making it) a war grave."
To protect it from looters and the curious, the wreck site has been placed in a protection zone and is subject to an Interim Heritage Order.
The site will be difficult to effectively police, however, and Mr Crews said he hoped the fact the sub was probably a war grave might deter interference.
"You would hope people respect it for what it is," Mr Crews said.
"It's just a pity the issue's raised with some concern that there may be people less scrupulous than those who found it who would be wanting to have a closer look themselves."
