 | HMAS Sydney found | |
 | HMAS Sydney found, a great World War II mystery may have been solved after a search team claimed to have located the missing wreck of the warship HMAS Sydney off the west coast of Australia, a report said Saturday.
The HMAS Sydney sunk in 1941 in a battle with the German raider Kormoran, with the loss of all 645 on board. The exact location of the wreck has been uncertain for decades and has been the subject of several major hunts.
A team using a grappling hook and an underwater camera last weekend located a previously unknown wreck off Cape Inscription at the north of Dirk Hartog island in Western Australia state, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
The wreck is lying in about 150 metres (500 feet) of water, the report said.
Phil Shepherd, one of the searchers, said items recorded on the video such as radio aerials made it highly likely they had found the long-lost HMAS Sydney.
"I've always wanted to find out where the souls of those sailors lay for all the people who have grieved over the years," Shepherd was quoted saying. "I've got a family member there too.
"This is a sacred site and a war grave -- probably our most important war grave. We hope we can give the families some closure knowing where their people are and where they can place some flowers."
The video showed scenes of tangled wreckage over a vast expanse of deck, much longer than any other vessel known to have sunk in the area. The items visible included radio aerials, steam tubes and other items that would be typical of the HMAS Sydney.
It also showed signs of extensive damage.
HMAS Sydney sank on November 19, 1941 after a battle with the Kormoran, which also sank, although most of the German vessel's crew of 397 were rescued.
