 | Great Barrier Reef named world's best tourist destination
Queensland's Great Barrier Reef has been voted the best tourist destination at an international awards ceremony in Portugal.
Queensland Tourism Industry Council chief executive Daniel Gschwind says there were more than 130 entries from 40 countries.
Mr Gschwind expects the award will boost international tourism to Queensland and says it proves the reef is still a world-class destination.
"It certainly is very gratifying to see that a natural asset that has been talked about a lot, in terms of the threats that it faces from climate change, to be recognised as a destination, as a marine park that is managed so efficiently," he said.
Mr Gschwind says the award recognises the collaboration between many stakeholders in the industry.
"The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the tourism industry and particularly the tourism operators who work together in a way that ensures that we cannot only generate the economic activity, but also ensuring that it's sustained into the future and its conservation is assured for the future," he said.
