| Great Barrier Reef warning a wake-call
Labor's Peter Garrrett says new research showing Pacific coral reefs (The Great Barrier Reef) are dying faster than ever should serve as a wake-up call to the federal government.
The study from the University of North Carolina found the decline in the reefs is driven by climate change, disease and coastal development.
The losses were just as bad in Australia's well-protected Great Barrier Reef as they were in poorly managed marine reserves in the Philippines, the study found.
"The Great Barrier Reef is our greatest natural asset but the failure of the Howard government to introduce a comprehensive climate change plan is compounding its risk of extinction," said Peter Garrett, the shadow minister for climate change, in a statement.
Peter Garrett said the Great Barrier Reef was the world's most extensive coral reef system and an economic powerhouse, contributing nearly $6 billion to Australia's economy and sustaining 63,000 jobs.
"The Queensland economy will be permanently damaged if we fail to deliver comprehensive climate change solutions that secure the the Great Barrier Reef's future," he said.
"With three quarters of the world's coral reefs located in the Indo-Pacific and up to 60 per cent expected to be lost by 2030, our region is at the front-line of climate change."
