 | Great Barrier Reef Tourism industry calls for reef pest intervention
Queensland tourism industry wants an emergency fund set up to deal with future outbreaks of the crown of thorns starfish on the Great Barrier Reef.
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Tourism Operators say they expect more problems with the starfish, despite a recent report suggesting the threat has eased.
A study by the Institute of Marine Science found no evidence to suggest there will be another outbreak in the near future.
But the tourism group says there is a large number of juvenile starfish off Cairns that would not have been picked up in the study.
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Tourism Operators have lobbied the previous federal environment minister to put aside a contingency fund of up to $2 million to battle the destructive pests, and will raise the issue with the new Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, later this year.
Chairman David Windsor says early intervention is needed to control the starfish.
"One of the things that we found when we approached the Government in the past to get money for the crown of thorns starfish was it took about two years," he said.
"You've got the bureaucratic process to go through, and by that time, the crown of thorns outbreak was so severe that it was almost too late."
Mr Windsor says the pest is very destructive.
"One single crown of thorn starfish, let's say an average adult which could be just under a metre across, eats its own body diameter in coral in one night," he said.
"So if you've got thousands of starfish, that's thousands of square metres of coral that gets destroyed every night."
