 | Gastro hospital outbreak 'worsening'
A gastroenteritis outbreak at a hospital in northwest Tasmania has dramatically worsened, forcing the cancellation of all elective surgery.
North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) chief executive Ken Campbell said so far 42 staff and 27 patients had been affected by gastro across both NWRH Mersey and Burnie campuses.
He said that while other services were being maintained, both campuses were under severe pressure and patients may need to be referred to other hospitals.
Mr Campbell said the outbreak appeared to have been caused by a highly contagious virus originating in the community, although tests had yet to confirm the exact cause.
"At Mersey, 35 staff and 20 patients have now developed symptoms of gastro and at Burnie seven staff and seven patients have become ill," Mr Campbell said.
He said staff members were required to take sick leave as soon as symptoms appeared.
Patients were being isolated at both campuses in an attempt to restrict the spread of the illness within the hospital.
Special cleaning procedures had been enacted by the hospital's infection control team and cleaning of affected areas would occur at regular intervals throughout the day, he said.
People who have either had gastro themselves within the last four to five days, or been in contact with anyone who has had gastro over that period, are being asked to refrain from visiting the hospital if possible.
Mr Campbell none of those affected were seriously ill as a result of gastroenteritis, which causes chronic diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting.
