 | Fraser Island tourists urged not to feed dingoes after another attack
Visitors to Fraser Island in south-east Queensland are being reminded not to feed dingoes, after a young girl was attacked on the island yesterday.
The four-year-old girl was bitten by the dingo on the thigh, buttocks and lower back, but did not need to go to hospital after being treated by paramedics at the scene.
Parks and Wildlife spokesman, Terry Harper, says the attack appears to have been unprovoked.
"This attack is probably a legacy of previous behaviour from visitors or residents making food available," he said.
Experts say feeding dingoes makes the animals reliant on humans and draws packs to popular tourist locations.
"We just plead with people to make sure that food isn't left available for dingoes because its likely to increase attacks," Mr Harper said.
Dingo researcher Nick Baker says small children are more prone to dingo attacks.
"They are about the size of animals that dingoes would prefer to eat," he said.
He says the animals are more excitable at this time of year.
"You're right in the middle of breeding season and unfortunately breeding season falls around about Easter every year," Mr Baker said.
Authorities say the dingo will be put down if it can be identified.
