 | Duck shooting season opens in Tasmania
Tasmania's duck shooting season has opened but birds are in such short supply that there's been none of the usual clashes between wildlife activists and hunters.
About 45 Coalition Against Duck Shooting activists arrived at Moulting Lagoon at the entrance to Freycinet National Park, in Tasmania's east, before sunrise on Saturday.
They were prepared for battle in their annual campaign to disrupt the shooters and save the ducks.
But campaign director Laurie Levy said the scene on Saturday morning was very subdued. Ducks were sparse, there was very little shooting and some of the estimated 40 hunters had packed up and gone home, he said.
"It's been a very, very quiet morning," said Laurie Levy .
"The Tasmanian government has been warned that water bird numbers were dangerously low right down the east coast of Australia and there shouldn't have been a season in Tasmania.
But the Lennon government went ahead because they're looking after their mates, the hunters."
Laurie Levy said conditions proved what the activists had been preaching, that the drought had severely diminish duck populations.
The activists will remain at the lagoon until Sunday, but they don't see this as a victory.
Laurie Levy said the campaign would continue so long as the government favoured shooters over conservation. The tide of public opinion would eventually stamp out the sport, he said.
"With climate change, a long drought, el nino every couple of years now and really low numbers of waterbirds right down the east coast I can't see it would be sustainable in the future."
Tasmania is the only state in Australia allowing duck shooting this year. The season was shortened by two weeks because of the drought and is due to finish on June 11.
Victoria and South Australia have called a moratorium on duck shooting this season, while the sport is permanently banned in NSW and Queensland.
