 | Cyclone Kara forms off WA coast
A Category one tropical Cyclone Kara has formed off the coast of far north Western Australia.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said a cyclone watch had been issued for coastal areas between Broome and Onslow as Cyclone Kara approached.
BOM spokesman Andrew Burton said Cyclone Kara would probably intensify during the next 24 hours but then weaken as it approached the coast.
"It's quite likely to become a category two cyclone but thereafter on Monday and certainly by Tuesday it will start to experience unfavourable conditions and weaken," Mr Burton said.
At 2pm (WST) Cyclone Kara was estimated to be 465km north north-west of Port Hedland and 470km north of Karratha.
Mr Burton said Kara was expected to start heading towards the coast sometime Monday.
"The major concern at this point in time is in relation to the potential for flooding in the Pilbara, particularly in the areas that have had quite a bit of rain already in the preceding weeks,"he said.
"It's not expected to produce a severe tropical cyclone wind impact on the coast ... it could well produce a category one or two impact on the coast, though."
The State Emergency Service and the Fire and Emergency Services Association said there are no current community alerts.
Earlier this month, Cyclone George killed three people - Sydney Desmond Baker, 74, Craig Raabe, 42, and Debra Till, 47 - when it swept through the Pilbara region.
