 | Cradle Mountain search for missing tourist halts | |
 | The search for a Danish tourist missing on Tasmania's freezing Cradle Mountain has been suspended because of bad weather.
Low cloud, rain, and the threat of snow grounded the Westpac rescue helicopter and drove police, the State Emergency Service and volunteers to search tracks below the mountain.
A snow-covered backpack containing a tent, camping equipment and a Danish passport in the name of Kasper Kataoka Sorensen, 21, was found on the summit of Cradle Mountain on Sunday.
A search was launched for Mr Sorensen on Monday but it was suspended at dusk because of bad weather.
Inspector Brian Edmonds said he holds grave fears for the safety of Mr Sorensen because of sub-zero temperatures on the mountain and the steep and rugged terrain where his backpack was found.
Insp Edmonds understands that the tourist arrived in Tasmania on July 2 after telling friends he was going to make the climb solo.
It is not clear how long he has been on the mountain and his walk was not registered with rangers.
Insp Edmonds said Mr Sorensen's family in Denmark have been notified.
Cradle Mountain is a magnet for tourists and bushwalkers and is well-known for its treacherous terrain.
