 | Breast cancer attacks emotions of young
Younger breast cancer survivors have a much slower emotional recovery than women struck by the disease later in life, research has found.
A survey examining the quality of life of almost 300 women with the disease found that most adjusted well in the 18 months after diagnosis.
However, women under 50 reported a particular struggle with their emotional wellbeing, according to the Queensland University of Technology study.
"We found the younger breast cancer survivors had more difficulty adjusting to their diagnosis, with a low emotional wellbeing even 18 months after diagnosis," National Breast Cancer Foundation scholar Tracey Di Sipio said.
"It's probably harder for a younger woman to be confronted by a direct threat to her life."
They may also have extra concerns over fertility if they haven't yet had children, or sexuality and body image, she said.
"What this shows is a need for more targeted programs aimed at improving the emotional wellbeing of younger women," said Ms Di Sipio.
About one in 11 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 75.
The study compared the wellbeing of survivors at six, 12 and 18 months post-diagnosis with women who did not have the disease.
The research team will now enlist 400 more survivors to study the recovery of women in rural and regional Queensland.
"We will be looking at the physical limitations faced by breast cancer survivors in country areas as well as the emotional and social impacts on their everyday lives, and whether that hampers their recovery," the researcher said.
