 | Box Jellyfish Stings in Calliope River | |
 | Calliope River - Box Jellyfish
A 10-year-old girl stung by a box jellyfish in central Queensland's Calliope River has been flown to Brisbane for emergency treatment.
The girl and her brother were stung more than 20 kilometres upstream in the Calliope River. Her brother was not badly hurt.
Dr Peter Fenner, who specializes in marine stings, says it is very rare to find box jellyfish so far inland as they only survive in salt water.
"The girl is most unfortunate to have been stung - a major sting can stop someone from breathing very quickly and can stop the heart," he said.
"Some of the recent stings we've had have been resuscitated but have actually haven't ever recovered.
"So it's very, very heartening to see the fact that this girl may actually survive it and the fact she's survived this far is very, very good news."
However, scientist Dr Lisa Gershwin says box jellyfish can survive many kilometres inland.
"The Calliope River goes about 25 kilometres up as a marine environment therefore the box jellyfish are still comfortable in that marine environment," she said.
"They're not comfortable in a brackish or freshwater environment though."
Marine conservationist Neville Coleman also says it is unlikely, but not impossible, for box jellyfish to be found many kilometres inland.
Mr Coleman says they are hard to see, especially in muddy water.
"Most of the stingings have been on the coast or in estuaries but that doesn't mean it hasn't occurred before - not everything is reported," he said.
