 | Bowen brilliance sinks Tigers
Cowboys full-back Matt Bowen confirmed his reputation as a bona fide match-winner with a brilliant late flurry to clinch a thrilling 25-24 victory over Wests Tigers in their round four NRL match at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night.
In tonight's other fixture, the Eels punished the Canberra Raiders 38-6 in their clash at Parramatta Stadium.
The Eels took a 12-0 lead into the break, before running roughshod over the plucky Raiders as Nathan Hindmarsh led from the front with an impressive double, while Luke Burt put away five conversions.
Meanwhile in Townsville, the Tigers looked destined for an upset when they shot to a 24-12 lead in the 60th minute, but an 80-metre effort from centre Ashley Graham and an electrifying individual effort from Bowen put the Cowboys level to set up a thrilling climax.
Bowen then emerged to shoot a close-range field goal to seal an unlikely victory one minute from time as the Cowboys extended their unbeaten run, while the Tigers slumped to their fourth straight loss of the campaign.
Earlier, the Tigers came out firing to take an early 14-6 lead over the Cowboys, posting two tries and a penalty before the home side pegged back with a late try in the opening period.
Daniel Fitzhenry and Robbie Farah scored for the Tigers in the first stanza, while Graham picked up the first of his brace late in the half.
The Tigers then shot out further with tries to Dean Collis and Paul Whatuira, before Graham raced away for his second and Bowen crossed in the 74th minute.
Bowen has returned to his brilliant best after an indifferent 2006 season, with tonight's heroics reminiscent of his round one performance against the Broncos when he also scored a late try and poached a field goal to win the game for the Cowboys.
