Body found in missing bushwalker search
A body has been found in the Kanangra-Boyd National Park near Oberon, west of Sydney, where a bushwalker has been missing since Monday.
Police said the body had not yet been formally identified.
The ground and air search for a 38-year-old man from Marsfield, in Sydney's north-west, was called off on Sunday afternoon, in its fifth day.
The man's wife reported him missing on Wednesday after he failed to return home as scheduled on Monday.
Steve Tredinnick, a fellow bushwalker, said the missing man set out on a 45km trek to Katoomba last Friday.
Mr Tredinnick said the man appeared confused about which path to take when they first met in the national park, near Oberon.
"He started to take the wrong fork (in the track), which would have taken him a long way out of the road, so we corrected him on that," Mr Tredinnick said.
Mr Tredinnick and another bushwalker, Brent Hansen, walked with the man for about 30 minutes on Good Friday, April 6, but had not seen him since.
He appeared to have new equipment but was carrying a basic map with hand-drawn markings, continued on and was in front of Mr Tredinnick and his friend on the trek.
But no one had seen the man when Mr Tredinnick and Mr Hansen reached Dex Creek later that day.
"Even by the end of the first day when we camped at Dex Creek, the people there hadn't seen this fellow," he said.
"That's sort of maybe a concern that he hadn't even made it that far, if you like."
Mr Tredinnick said there was hardly any mobile reception in the area, and that bushwalkers should carry an emergency location beacon in the remote area.
"You reach certain points out there and you've got to be experienced in terms of reading a topographical map and using a compass in conjunction with that to find a route off the plateaus," he said.
"It's such a rugged place, it can be quite unforgiving."
Police found the man's car in the Kanangra Walls car park with his mobile phone and other personal items inside.
